So let’s start at looking at what a supply chain is ….
A supply chain is the system of producing and delivering a product or service.
- It encompasses all the processes, organizations, resources, and people involved.
- It begins with the sourcing of raw materials and extends through production, transportation, and distribution to the final customer.
- In other words, it’s a network that covers everything required to bring a product from its origin to the consumer.
The key elements of a Supply Chain
- Suppliers – They provide the raw materials or components.
- Manufacturing – Raw materials are transformed into finished products through production and assembly.
- Warehousing – Products are stored until they’re needed for the next stage.
- Transportation – Moving products between various points in the supply chain, like from suppliers to manufacturers or from warehouses to retailers.
- Distribution – Getting products to retailers or directly to customers.
- Customers – The end destination, where the products are finally sold and used.
Now take a minute to think about your business. Which of the above are you? Do you supply materials or services? Do you turn things into something else? Do you look after items or transport or distribute them? Do you deal with the consumer?
There are several types of Supply Chains. These include –
- Traditional Supply Chain – A straightforward flow of goods and information from supplier to customer.
- Digital Supply Chain – Heavily reliant on technology to track, manage, and improve efficiencies.
- Global Supply Chain – Operates on an international level, involving multiple countries and regions.
